Holderchem worked closely with Holcim Beton SAL to supply Bouygues with mass concrete. It was required to produce Beirut port seafront armor breakwater units. Concrete durability had to be carefully ascertained. The concrete armor units needed to withstand aggressive agents over the entire concrete life cycle. Concrete-technology challenges included compaction, early age de-molding, and the handling of short-term strength and temperature-associated degradations. Concrete with low heat-of-hydration had to be produced as mass-concrete did not transfer heat to the surrounding environment. Special considerations had to be given to the size of aggregates, chloride diffusion rate, and sulfate content. Many factors had to be investigated, including the risk of incompatibility between concrete constituents such as alkali-aggregates reaction.
