Ground glass blast furnace slag (GGBFS)

Description

BATIMIX Slag DG3-P is a nonmetallic hydraulic cement consisting essentially of silicates and aluminosilicates of calcium developed in a molten condition simultaneously with iron in a blast furnace. It is used in both wet and dry-mix shotcrete applications. It enhances strength and durability and reduces the permeability of hardened concrete.

Main Purpose

When added to the shotcrete mix, the ultra-fine particles of Batimix Slag DG3-P significantly improve the particle packing by physically filling the voids in the cement paste. This leads to a more densified shotcrete skeleton with a reduced level of bleeding. On the other hand, this product reacts chemically with the calcium hydroxide present in the cement paste, yielding a calcium silicate hydrate gel that significantly enhances strength, water/chloride impermeability, and durability.

Applications using Batimix Slag DG3-P include all types of high strength and specialty shotcrete and repair applications.

Features

Shotcrete prepared with Batimix Slag DG3-P are characterized by the following:

In the plastic state:

  • Enhanced workability and slump retention
  • Slightly extended initial and final setting times
  • Reduced heat of hydration, a feature particularly advantageous in mass concrete
  • Reduced bleeding and segregation

In the hardened state:

  • Optimized construction costs due to reduced cement contents in the concrete mix
  • Increased late-age compressive and flexural strengths

Health and Safety

Batimix Slag DG3-P is not a hazardous material. However, it should not be swallowed or come into contact with eyes. Suitable goggles should be worn. For additional information, kindly refer to the product’s Material Safety Data Sheet.

STANDARD COMPLIANCE

Batimix Slag DG3-P complies with all current requirements of ASTM C 989 Grade 80.

DOSAGE RATES

The optimum dosage of BATIMIX GGBFS 100 to meet specific requirements is best determined by trials using the actual mix composition with site materials under conditions that will be experienced in use. As a guide to the trial tests, the addition rates shall vary from 5% to 50% of the cement. Dosages outside the specified range may be used if necessary to meet particular mix requirements.

EFFECT OF OVERDOSING

In general, an overdose of BATIMIX slag DG3-P would lead to decreased early strength as compared to that normally obtained.

COMPATIBILITY

Batimix Slag DG3-P is compatible with all other Batimix admixtures incorporated in the same mortar. Mixtures based on Portland cement with or without replacement materials such as slica fume and fly ash are also fully compatible with Batimix Slag DG3-P.

DISPENSING

Batimix Slag DG3-P is introduced in the mortar in a similar manner and at the same time as Portland cement or any other cementitious material such as silica fume or fly ash. Because of its ultra-fine particles, the mixing time should generally be increased to ensure effective dispersion throughout the mass mortar.
