Set-retarding admixture for concrete

Description

BATIMIX Retarder 210 is a synthetically produced set-retarding admixture for concrete based on selected gluconate organic polymers. It does not contain any corroding ingredient that could potentially attack steel, aluminum, or zinc embedments.

Main Purpose

BATIMIX Retarder 210 delays setting times, increasing both workability and slump retention required for proper concrete placing and finishing operations, particularly in hot climates. It is required for concrete that needs to be transported over long distances. It keeps the concrete from hardening should delivery schedules be lengthened by traffic jams.

BATIMIX Retarder 210 improves slump retention over time, eliminating cold joints between adjacent concrete layers. It is particularly suitable for large concrete-pours and slow casting rates.

It is used to produce plain and reinforced concrete castings such as precast, ready-mixed, lightweight, structural, and architectural, with a delayed setting. It is also used to enhance the flowability of pumped concrete.

Features

Concrete prepared with BATIMIX Retarder 210 is characterized by the following:

In the plastic state:

  • Prolonged and controlled rates of setting
  • Reduced cold joints or other discontinuities
  • Improved slump retention and finishing times

In the hardened state:

  • Reduced water permeability and cracking
  • Non-staining and better surface appearance
  • Improved concrete durability

Properties

  • Appearance : brown liquid
  • Specific gravity: 1.1 ± 0.02 at 23 ºC
  • Chloride content : nil
  • Air entrainment : typically less than 0.5% at normal dosages
  • Alkali content : typically less than 2.5% as Na₂O

Health and Safety

BATIMIX Retarder 210 is not a hazardous material. However, it should not be swallowed or allowed to come into contact with skin and eyes. Suitable gloves and goggles should be worn. For additional information, kindly refer to the product’s Material Safety Data Sheet.

Compliance with Standards

BATIMIX Retarder 210 complies with: • EN 934-2 : T8 • ASTM C 494 Type B

Dosage Rates

The optimum dosage of BATIMIX Retarder 210 on slump retention, setting times, and hardening is best determined by trials using the actual concrete formulation with site materials under conditions that will be experienced in the field. As a guide to such trials, the addition rates shall vary from 0.2% to 1.0% of the cementitious materials. Dosages outside the specified range may also be used if necessary to meet particular mix requirements.

It is to be noted that the free water content should be reduced when designing concrete mixes with BATIMIX Retarder 210 to maintain similar W/C.

Effect of Overdosing

An overdose of BATIMIX Retarder 210 will produce a slight increase in concrete workability with significantly higher slump retention and setting retardation as compared to that normally obtained. However, if the concrete is properly cured, the ultimate strength will not be impaired by such setting retardation.

Compatibility

BATIMIX Retarder 210 is compatible with all other Batimix admixtures incorporated in the same concrete. During batching, all admixtures should be added separately to the concrete mix as this may alter their performances. BATIMIX Retarder 210 is compatible with all types of Portland cement and replacement materials such as silica fume, fly ash, and blast furnace slag.

Dispensing

Automatic dispensing systems should preferably be used to introduce the correct quantity of BATIMIX Retarder 210 in the concrete mixer. This admixture should not be directly introduced on the dry cement. It should rather be added after incorporating around 2/3 of the mixing water, and in any case prior to introducing other chemicals such as water reducers.

Technical Support

For proper products usage, Holderchem provides complete technical and laboratory support as well as on-site assistance pertaining to concrete mix design, admixture selection, materials testing, and dispensing equipment.

Storage

BATIMIX Retarder 210 has a minimum shelf life of 12 months if kept unopened and stored at temperatures ranging from 2 to 50 ºC.
