
PVA homopolymer bonding agent for plaster, stucco, and concrete
BATIMIX PVA Type I is an aqueous resin adhesive of a polyvinyl acetate base used for permanently bonding plaster, stucco, and concrete to damp or dry concrete and masonry surfaces.
BATIMIX PVA Type I is used to bond the finish plaster coat, or stucco, to concrete and masonry surfaces. It is also used as a bonding agent to repair ceiling and wall structures. It is suitable to bond new concrete to existing concrete. It can be used for exterior applications. It should not be used in areas subjected to constant wet conditions such as swimming pools, tank linings, parking areas, etc.
BATIMIX PVA Type I can be applied to either damp or dry surfaces. The film remains flexible and re-wettable up to 15 hours after application, depending on the ambient temperature. It eliminates any brown and scratch coats when plastering ceilings and columns.
BATIMIX PVA Type I is not a hazardous material. However, it should not be swallowed or allowed to come into contact with skin and eyes. Suitable gloves and goggles should be worn. For additional information, kindly refer to the product’s Material Safety Data Sheet.

PLASTER APPLICATIONS:
Surface Preparation – BATIMIX PVA TYPE I must be applied to structurally sound surfaces which are clean and free from all dirt, dust particles, oil, grease, or loose and scaly materials that may adversely affect uniform adhesion. Do not use over water soluble calcimine paints or rusted surfaces. Painted surfaces should be sanded to remove the gloss.
Mixing – When used in plaster applications, BATIMIX PVA Type I should be used as is from the container and requires no pre-mixing.
Placement – BATIMIX PVA Type I should be applied by brush, roller or spray in one continuous unbroken film. Allow at least 30 to 40 minutes drying time, before applying the plaster. When making plaster repairs it is imperative that each coat of plaster be allowed to properly cure before the application of successive coats.
Finishing – Finish the plaster to the desired texture.
CEMENT BOND COAT: Surface Preparation – If using this product as a slurry bond coat for a traffic bearing topping, the concrete must be clean and rough and free from all oil, dirt, debris, paint and unsound concrete. The surface must be prepared mechanically using a scabbler, bushhammer, or shotblast which will give a surface profile of a minimum 3 mm and expose the coarse aggregate of the concrete. Acid etching is not acceptable. Allow the concrete surface to dry. Do not place slurry coat on standing water. All concrete must possess an open surface texture with all curing compounds and sealers removed.
Bonding – For bonding traffic bearing toppings with this product, it is strongly recommended that a slurry coat be used rather than using this product as a primer by itself. The slurry coat should be mixed as follows: 50 kg cement, 13.5 kg BATIMIX PVA Type I, and around 27 liter of water.
The resulting coverage will be 65-85 m² for this quantity. Actual coverage is highly dependent upon the substrate profile. After the surface has been prepared, prime all areas with a slurry coat before the topping is applied.
Mixing – Small quantities may be mixed with a drill and “jiffy” mixer. Use a paddle type mortar mixer for large jobs. Add the appropriate amount of BATIMIX PVA Type I and water for the batch size and then add the cement. Mix a minimum of 5 minutes. The mixed product should be quickly transported to the repair area and placed immediately.
PRIMER FOR NON-TRAFFIC BEARING TOPPINGS AND SELF–LEVELLING UNDERLAYMENTS: Surface Preparation – New concrete must be a minimum of 3 days old and must be broom textured at the time of placement to secure a good mechanical bond for the underlayment. Old concrete must be clean and textured and free from all oil, dirt, debris, curing compounds, sealers and paint. Unsound concrete may be removed by a scabbler, bushhammer, or shotblast which will give a surface profile similar to very coarse grit sandpaper. Remove all residue with a vacuum cleaner or pressure washer. Acid etching is acceptable only when mechanical preparation is impractical. Only contractors experienced in acid etching should use this means of surface preparation. The salts of the reaction must be thoroughly washed away. Allow the concrete to completely dry.
Mixing – BATIMIX PVA Type I may be diluted with water by simply mixing one liter of BATIMIX Bond 100 with one liter of water and agitating until the solution is uniform (Add BATIMIX Bond 100 to the water and not vice versa).
Placement – Broom or brush the primer into place. Allow to dry before placing the underlayment. If the surface has not been appropriately sealed, a second application of the primer may be necessary. The topping should be placed within up to 15 hours, depending on the ambient temperature. Clean tools and equipment with water before the material hardens.
