Ready-to-use highly permeable pervious concrete
BATIMIX Pervious Concrete 501 is a ready-to-use special type of concrete. It exhibits high porosity for flatwork applications, which results from the highly interconnected void content. This porosity allows water and other sources to pass and precipitate through it.
It is made from Type I Portland cement and carefully-graded coarse aggregates and selected additives such as plasticizing and water-retaining agents.
BATIMIX Pervious Concrete 501 is ideal for pedestrian walkways and greenhouse areas. It is ready-to-use. It is particularly suitable for use in areas with difficult accessibility to construction crews and equipment.
BATIMIX Pervious Concrete 501 has the following characteristics:
BATIMIX Pervious Concrete 501 contains cement and thus is irritating to the eyes and skin. In case of contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water. Wear suitable gloves. For further information, kindly refer to Material Safety Data Sheet.
1 – Substrate preparation Prior to casting BATIMIX Pervious Concrete 501, exposed surfaces and reinforcing bars should be inspected to ensure adequate bonding of the product. In certain cases, for optimum bonding, sandblast the substrate and reinforcing bar surfaces and then remove all dust and debris by air blasting, low pressure water blasting, or brooming. Prior to concreting, the substrate should be saturated but free of standing water (SSD condition).
2 – Formwork If castings are to be made to vertical or overhead surfaces, formwork will be required. Formworks should be designed to withstand the developed concrete lateral pressure.
3 – Product preparation A 25-kg bag of BATIMIX Concrete 501 should be mixed with 1.2 to 1.7 liters of clean water, depending on the desired slump consistency. The mixing should be done with a medium-speed mechanical mixer for a minimum of 3 minutes until obtaining a consistent homogenous material.
4 – Concrete placement Do not place BATIMIX Pervious Concrete 501 when ambient temperature is below 5 °C or higher than 35 °C; refer to ACI 306R “Cold Weather Concreting” and ACI 305 “Hot Weather Concreting”. In warm weather, cold water can be used to cool concrete temperature and prevent rapid workability loss.
BATIMIX Pervious Concrete 501 can be placed by pumping or cast-in-place using buckets. It must be thoroughly worked into the forms so that they are entirely filled and the reinforcing bars adequately and tightly surrounded. All placement and compaction operations should be completed within 30 minutes from the time of placing the concrete.
5 – Curing Freshly deposited BATIMIX Pervious Concrete 501 must be protected from excessively hot or cold temperatures and maintained with minimum moisture loss. Curing should begin immediately after the finishing operations and continue for a minimum of 3 days.
ASTM Test Method BATIMIX Pervious Concrete 501
Water per 25-kg bag 1.2 – 1.7 liters Initial slump (ASTM C 143) Around 150 mm Fresh wet density (ASTM C 138) Around 1,650 kg/m³ Void content (ASTM C 231) Min. 20% Compressive strength after 28 days Min. 10 MPa (ASTM C 39)
The following data are averages of several tests under laboratory conditions of 23 °C and 50% R.H.; they may significantly vary in the field. To adapt mixture composition to specific applications and climatic conditions, supplementary admixtures such as set-retarder or set-accelerator may be added to the original mix design.
BATIMIX Pervious Concrete 501 should be stored in a closed and dry place. Avoid freezing and excessive temperatures. Unopened bags have a shelf life of six months when stored as recommended.
