Hydration control set-regulating liquid admixture for extended life mortars

Description

BATIMIX MR 660 is a synthetically produced liquid set-regulator, classified as a retarding type admixture, used for producing extended life mortars conforming to the requirements of ASTM C 1142 standard specification for extended life mortar for unit masonry.

Main Purpose

Conventional mortars are prepared at the job-site. Extended life mortars are produced at manufacturing plants and delivered to the job site at ready-to-use consistencies. On-site, they are stored in containers that minimize moisture loss from evaporation, providing adequate protection from freezing in cold weather.

The initial hydration of extended life mortars is controlled through the incorporation of BATIMIX MR 660. It allows the mixture to remain plastic and workable for a period varying from 24 to 36 hours. At any time over that period, when the mortar is used, suction by the masonry units occurs, and the initial set takes place in a normal manner.

Extended life mortars that have stiffened due to a loss of water by evaporation can be retempered. This should not take place more than once over the working life of the mortar. To restore the mortar to the required consistency, water is added. Early strength development allows for the walls to be constructed at a normal rate. The mortar retains enough water to ensure long-term strength development.

Applications using BATIMIX MR 660 include all types of extended life mortars used for masonry applications, such as plastering, rendering, pointing, and bricklaying.

Features

Mortars prepared with BATIMIX MR 660 are characterized by the following:

In the plastic state:

  • Prolonged and controlled rates of setting
  • Improved workability retention over 24 to 36 hours period
  • Ready to use mortars, ensuring consistent fresh and hardened properties
  • Improved productivity and speed-up of construction works

In the hardened state:

  • Better surface appearance with fewer cracks and fissures
  • Improved adhesion strength and durability of the finished product

Properties

  • Appearance: brown liquid
  • Specific gravity: around 1.18 at 23 ºC
  • Chloride content: nil
  • Alkali content: typically less than 1.5% as Na₂O
  • Air entrainment: typically less than 1% at normal dosages
  • Solid content: minimum 40%
  • Freezing point: 0 ºC

Health and Safety

BATIMIX MR 660 is not a hazardous material. However, it should not be swallowed or allowed to come into contact with skin and eyes. Suitable gloves and goggles should be worn. For additional information, kindly refer to the product’s Material Safety Data Sheet.

Compliance with Standards

BATIMIX MR 660 complies with EN 934 Part 3.

Dosage Rates

The optimum dosage of BATIMIX MR 660 should be determined by trials using the actual mortar formulation under conditions that will be experienced on the field. As a guide to such trials, the addition rates shall vary from 0.6% to 1.4% of the cementitious materials.

When designing mortar mixes with BATIMIX MR 660, it is necessary to reduce the free water content to maintain similar W/C and compressive strength.

Effect of Overdosing

An overdose of BATIMIX MR 660 will produce a significant workability retention and increase in setting retardation as compared to that normally obtained. The resulting 28-day compressive strength may be slightly reduced.

Compatibility

BATIMIX MR 660 is compatible with all types of Portland cement, replacement materials such as silica fume, and other BATIMIX admixtures incorporated in the same mortar. During batching, all admixtures should be added separately to the mortar mix. The performance of various admixtures should be assessed using trial tests as such combinations may alter setting times, air entrainment, and early strength gain.

Dispensing

BATIMIX MR 660 should not be directly added on the dry cement. It should rather be added after incorporating around 2/3 of the mixing water, and in any case prior to introducing other chemicals such as water reducers

Technical Support

For proper products usage, Holderchem provides technical laboratory support and on-site assistance pertaining to the mortar mix design, admixture selection, and materials testing.

Storage

BATIMIX MR 660 has a minimum shelf life of 12 months if kept unopened and stored at temperatures ranging from 2 to 50 ºC.
