Batimix Mortar 721

Description

BATIMIX Mortar 721 is a pre-packaged mixture of Type I Portland cement, selected additives, and finely graded non-metallic aggregates. It is designed to be dry sprinkled over newly placed concrete substrates to improve resistance against slipping, abrasion, water penetration, and impact.

Main Purpose

BATIMIX Mortar 721 can be used as a floor hardener for both interior and exterior elements. Primary applications include lobbies and waiting rooms of commercial and public buildings, corridors, restaurants, auto-showrooms and service centers, factories, warehouse floors, and facilities.

Health and Safety

BATIMIX Mortar 721 contains cement that is irritating to the eyes and skin. In case of contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water. Wear suitable gloves. For further information, kindly refer to Material Safety Data Sheet.

Directions for Use

1 – General guidelines All dry shake floor hardeners are formulated to be applied to properly designed, non-air entrained concrete. Conditions such as high winds, low humidity, and hot or cold weather climates require mix design changes and adjustments in application and/or finishing procedures.

The proper number of BATIMIX Mortar 721 bags shall be positioned on both sides of the slab prior to the start of the placing operations.

Colored (pigmented) dry shakes require special attention to achieve a uniform color, including:

• Delay application of the shake as long as possible to get the maximum color saturation at the surface of the slab
• Apply the shake as evenly as possible and in two applications for maximum uniformity
• Best appearance is achieved by hand troweling the final finish

If the contractor is not familiar with the standard application techniques of a dry shake floor hardener, a pre-job meeting is recommended to review the project concrete mix design as well as placing and curing details unique to the particular job.

2 – Placing ACI 302 Guidelines should be properly followed when applying BATIMIX Mortar 721, including:

Apply the product on well designed, non-air entrained concrete mixes at temperatures between 15 and 30 ºC. If unusual conditions exist such as high winds and cold or hot weather, care should be taken to protect the slab during application.

After concrete is placed, use a bullfloat or darby to level the surface. Remove any bleed water by dragging the surface with burlap or a rubber hose. After the concrete has stiffened to the point of supporting floating operations, open the surface by hand or power floating. Normally, a finisher’s footprint of around 5 to 10 mm in depth indicates that the slab is ready for power floating. Earlier floating of the slab edges by hand is strongly recommended since the edges will dry first.

Check the specifications for the amount of BATIMIX Mortar 721 required per square meter, then stack the correct number of bags at each bay to be placed that day. Consumption rates may vary from 3.5 to 10 kg/m². This is important because it gives the finishers a “gauge” for applying the correct amount of material. For best results and uniformity of thickness, BATIMIX Mortar 721 should be applied in two shakes using approximately 2/3 of the total amount for the first shake.

Immediately after the slab surface has been opened by floating, apply the first shake in a uniform application by hand, spreader, or other suitable method. Allow the first shake to remain unworked on the surface until it has absorbed moisture and achieved a dark and uniform color. Then, float with hand or power float. Immediately after, apply the second shake and float like the first time.

3 – Finishing Finish the dry shake to the desired texture. It is to be noted that maximum abrasion resistance can be realized with a hard, smooth steel trowel finish. Do not add additional water to the surface during the finishing operations.

Specifications / Compliance with Standards

BATIMIX Mortar 721 exceeds the requirements of ASTM C 387 for Standard specification for packaged, dry, combined materials for mortar and concrete to suit specific product’s application requirements.

Storage

BATIMIX Mortar 721 should be stored in a closed and dry place. Avoid freezing and excessive temperatures. Unopened bags have a shelf life of six months when stored as recommended
