Description

BATIMIX MAE 500 is an aqueous solution of modified resins and surfactants. The product is used as an air-entraining admixture for all types of mortars and grouts. It is suitable for use in a wide range of temperatures.

Main Purpose

BATIMIX MAE 500 is used to produce air-entrained mortars and grouts. It enhances durability and resistance to frost and de-icing salts. It improves concrete mix cohesion and workability, particularly for mixes with poorly graded fine aggregates. It also helps reduce segregation and bleeding.

BATIMIX MAE 500 is incorporated in mortars and grouts used for masonry and repair work such as plastering, rendering, patching, pointing, bricklaying, and screeding. It is particularly recommended for use on surfaces exposed to freeze/thaw conditions.

Mortars prepared with BATIMIX MAE 500 are characterized by the following:

In the plastic state:

  • Controlled quantity of evenly distributed microscopic air bubbles
  • Enhanced cohesion and resistance to bleeding as less water is used
  • Improved workability, as internal friction is reduced.

In the hardened state:

  • Increased resistance to attack by sulfate, frost, corrosive water, and de-icing salts
  • Reduced absorptivity, with air bubbles acting as air plugs
  • Limitation of progressive cracks, as air bubbles dissipate energy at their tips
  • Improved overall mortar durability and surface appearance.

Properties

  • Appearance: off-white liquid
  • Specific gravity: around 1.01 at 23 ºC
  • Chloride content: nil
  • Alkali content: typically less than 1.5% as Na₂O
  • Freezing point : 0ºC

Health and Safety

BATIMIX MAE 500 is not a hazardous material. However, it should not be swallowed or allowed to come into contact with skin and eyes. Suitable gloves and goggles should be worn. For additional information, kindly refer to the product’s Material Safety Data Sheet.

Dosage Rates

The optimum dosage of BATIMIX MAE 500 to meet specific requirements is best determined by trials using the actual mix composition with site materials under conditions that will be experienced in use. This allows better optimization of admixture dosage and provides complete assessment of mortar properties. As a guide to such trials, the addition rates shall vary from 0.05% to 0.4% of the cementitious materials.

It should be noted that a large number of parameters affect the dosage required to obtain a desired level of air entrainment. These include nature and grading of fine aggregate, cement fineness and other mineral additives, water-cement ratio, temperature, mixing equipment, and application procedures. Mortar mixes must be tested regularly to ensure that the specified air content is achieved.

Effect of Overdosing

An overdose of BATIMIX MAE 500 will result in an increase in air entrainment which may significantly reduce strength. The degree of this effect will depend on the particular mix design and overdose level. Mortars with increased air content will generally have a higher level of workability.

Compatibility

BATIMIX MAE 500 is compatible with all types of Portland cement, replacement materials such as silica fume, and other BATIMIX admixtures incorporated in the same mortar. During batching, all admixtures should be added separately to the mortar mix. The performance of various admixtures should be assessed using trial tests as such combinations may alter setting times, air entrainment, and early strength gain.

Dispensing

BATIMIX MAE 500 should not be directly added on the dry cement or towards the end of mixing. It should rather be added at the beginning of mixing, i.e. after incorporating the aggregate particles along with around 1/3 of the mixing water.

Storage

BATIMIX MAE 500 has a minimum shelf life of 12 months if kept unopened and stored at temperatures ranging from 2 to 50 ºC.
