Batimix IWR 420-S

Holderchem

Liquid, integral water-repellent with plasticizing effect

Description

BATIMIX IWR 420-S is a liquid integral water-repellent admixture. It is used in all types of concrete mixes. It reduces absorptivity and water penetration from the surrounding environment. The product is formulated from carefully selected inorganic stearates and plasticizing polymers to improve concrete workability. It is supplied in powder-form, upon request.

Main Purpose

BATIMIX IWR 420-S significantly decreases the water permeability of concrete by creating a network of insoluble water-resistant material within the pores of the cement matrix. The admixture incorporated in the mix design leads to the formation of an effective internal barrier. This prevents water transmission throughout the concrete. The mixing-water demand decreases due to the plasticizing effect of the polymers incorporated in the concrete. This yields a denser, more durable concrete.

Applications using this product include all types of plain and reinforced concrete castings such as precast, ready-mixed, lightweight, pumped, and shotcrete.

Features

Concrete prepared with BATIMIX IWR 420-S is characterized by the following:

In the plastic state:

  • No detrimental effect on setting times
  • Reduced amount of mixing water for constant workability and improved workability for constant W/C

In the hardened state:

  • Minimized water permeability, capillary suction, and moisture transfer
  • No negative influence on drinking water in concrete storage tanks
  • Reduced potential for efflorescence and probability for rebar corrosion
  • Reduced attack of soluble salts and aggressive ions

Properties

  • Appearance : off-white liquid
  • Specific gravity: around 0.98 at 23 ºC
  • Chloride content : nil
  • Alkali content : typically less than 1.5% as Na₂O
  • Air entrainment : less than 1.5% increase at normal dosages

Health and Safety

BATIMIX IWR 420-S is not considered a hazardous product. However, it should not be swallowed or allowed to come into contact with skin and eyes. Suitable gloves and goggles should be worn. For additional information, kindly refer to the product’s Material Safety Data Sheet.

Compliance with Standards

BATIMIX IWR 420-S complies with EN 934-2 : T9.

Dosage Rates

The performance of BATIMIX IWR 420-S is best assessed after preliminary tests using the actual concrete mix design with site materials under conditions that will be experienced in site. The product is found to be effective over a wide range of concrete formulations. Typically, dosages varying from 0.2% to 1% of the cement weight are recommended.

It is to be noted that the free water content should be reduced when designing concrete mixes with BATIMIX IWR 420-S to maintain similar W/C.

Effect of Overdosing

Tests have shown that overdosed concrete mixtures with BATIMIX IWR 420-S will result in increased cohesiveness. The 28-days compressive strength will not be affected remarkably.

Compatibility

BATIMIX IWR 420-S is compatible with all other Batimix admixtures incorporated in the same concrete. It should not be pre-mixed with other admixture as this may alter its performance. During batching, the admixtures should be added separately to the concrete mix. The performance of various admixtures on the fresh and hardened concrete properties should be assessed using trial tests.

BATIMIX IWR 420-S is compatible with all types of Portland cement and replacement materials such as silica fume, fly ash, and blast furnace slag.

Dispensing

Accurate and reliable automatic dispensing systems should be used to introduce the correct quantity of BATIMIX IWR 420-S in the concrete mixer to avoid variations in dosage. This product should not be directly added on the dry cementitious particles. It should rather be introduced after incorporating all of the mixing water and other chemical admixtures.
