Batimix IWR 416

Holderchem

Powder water-repellent for concrete, mortars and grouts

Description

BATIMIX IWR 416 is a concentrated powder integral water-repellent admixture for use in all types of mortars and concrete mixes to reduce absorptivity and water penetration from the surrounding environment. It incorporates carefully selected inorganic stearate raw materials imparting water-repelling properties.

Main Purpose

BATIMIX IWR 416 significantly decreases the water permeability of cementitious products, albeit without altering their other properties in the fresh and hardened states. It creates a network of insoluble water-resistant material within the pores of the cement matrix. This forms an effective internal barrier preventing water transmission.

Applications using BATIMIX IWR 416 include all types of mortars and plain and reinforced concrete castings, such as precast, ready-mixed, lightweight, pumped, and shotcrete.

Features

Products prepared with BATIMIX IWR 416 are characterized by the following:

In the plastic state:

  • No detrimental effect on workability, slump retention, or setting

In the hardened state:

  • Extremely minimized water permeability, capillary suction, and moisture transfer
  • No negative influence on drinking water in concrete storage tanks
  • Reduced potential for efflorescence and probability for rebar corrosion
  • Reduced attack of soluble salts and aggressive ions
  • Improved products’ durability and better surface quality

Properties

  • Appearance : light brown
  • Specific gravity: around 0.55 at 23 ºC
  • Chloride content : nil

Health and Safety

BATIMIX IWR 416 is not considered a hazardous product. However, it should not be swallowed or allowed to come into contact with skin and eyes. Suitable gloves and goggles should be worn. For additional information, kindly refer to the product’s Material Safety Data Sheet.

Dosage Rates

The performance of BATIMIX IWR 416 is best assessed after preliminary tests using the actual mix design with site materials under conditions that will be experienced on site. The product is found to be effective over a wide range of concrete formulations. Typically, dosages varying from 0.05% to 0.8% of the cement weight are recommended, depending on the level of reduction of water permeability. Higher dosages may still be used, provided trial tests are conducted.

For indication purposes, a 150-mm slump concrete prepared with 350 kg/m3 of Portland cement, W/C of 0.50, and 0.3% of BATIMIX IWR 416 will exhibit an absorption rate of 0.75% when tested according to ASTM C642. Such value increases up to 4.5% for similar reference concrete made without BATIMIX IWR 416.

Effect of Overdosing

Tests have shown that overdosed concrete or mortar mixtures with BATIMIX IWR 416 will result in increased level of workability.

Compatibility

BATIMIX IWR 416 is compatible with all other Batimix admixtures incorporated in the same concrete. It should not be pre-mixed with other admixture as this may alter its performance. During batching, the admixtures should be added separately to the concrete mix. The performance of various admixtures on the fresh and hardened concrete properties should be assessed using trial tests.

BATIMIX IWR 416 is compatible with all types of Portland cement and replacement materials such as silica fume, fly ash, and blast furnace slag.

Dispensing

Accurate dispensing systems should be used to introduce the correct quantity of BATIMIX IWR 416 in the concrete or mortar mixer to avoid variations in dosage. This product is generally introduced after incorporating all of the mixing water and other chemical admixtures.
