Description

BATIMIX Fly Ash DG3-P is a powder fly ash pozzolanic additive used in wet and dry-mix shotcrete applications to enhance strength and durability and reduce the permeability of hardened concrete.

Main Purpose

BATIMIX Fly Ash DG3-P are ultra-fine particles that significantly improve the particle packing of shotcrete mixes as they physically fill voids in the cement paste. This leads to a more densified shotcrete skeleton with a reduced level of bleeding. On the other hand, this product reacts chemically with the calcium hydroxide present in the cement paste, yielding a calcium silicate hydrate gel that significantly enhances strength, water/chloride impermeability, and durability. Applications incorporating this product include all types of high strength and specialty shotcrete and repair applications.

Compliance with Standards

Batimix Fly Ash DG3-P meets the requirements of Class F admixtures according to ASTM C618 Standard Specification for Coal Fly Ash and Raw or Calcined Natural Pozzolan for Use in Concrete.

Dosage Rates

Batimix Fly Ash DG3-P is normally used at the rate of 15% to 25% of the cement weight. Dosage varies with the reactivity of the ash and the desired effects on the concrete. Primarily trials tests are recommended using the actual mix composition with site materials, in particular if dosages greater than 25% of the cement weight are to be used.

Shotcrete containing Batimix Fly Ash may be applied in the same manner as conventional dry mix shotcrete. However, special emphasis should be given to the finishing and curing operations. Proper curing methods such as continuous moist curing or liquid compound membranes should be implemented for a minimum of 7 days.

As the level of replacement increases, the early-age strength decreases. However, long-term strength development is improved when fly ash is used and at some age the strength of the fly ash concrete will equal that of the portland cement concrete so long as sufficient curing is provided.

Effect of Overdosing

An overdose of Batimix Fly Ash DG3-P will result in a highly sticky and viscous mortar with significantly reduced workability. This likely leads to greater amounts of superplasticizer for a given workability, which in turn, may lead to significant set retardation. Furthermore, the mortar may become difficult to finish requiring special finishing and curing procedures.

Compatibility

Batimix Fly Ash DG3-P is compatible with all other Batimix admixtures incorporated in the same mortar. Mixtures based on Portland cement with or without replacement materials such as slica fume and blast furnace slag are also fully compatible with Batimix Fly Ash DG3-P.

DISPENSING

Batimix Fly Ash DG3-P is introduced in the mortar in a similar manner and at the same time as Portland cement or any other cementitious material such as silica fume or blast furnace slag. Because of its ultra-fine particles, the mixing time should generally be increased to ensure effective dispersion throughout the mass mortar.

Storage

Batimix Fly Ash DG3-P has a minimum shelf life of 12 months if kept unopened and stored at temperatures ranging from 2 to 50 ºC.
