Ready-to-use colored concrete for architectural applications
BATIMIX Concrete 505 Series products are pre-packed high-strength colored concrete products. They are designed for architectural applications. They are made of Portland cement, coarse aggregates, colored pigments, and selected plasticizing and shrinkage-compensating agents. They are pre-mixed concrete infused with pigments, offering consistent and vibrant hues that enhance design aesthetics. With a diverse range of pigments available, it provides architects and designers the creative freedom to integrate a wide spectrum of colors seamlessly into various elements like walls, floors, and facades. Their UV stability, durability, and ease of use make it suitable for both indoor and outdoor projects, while maintaining the structural integrity of traditional concrete. This material not only saves time during construction but also enables the realization of unique and visually captivating architectural visions.
BATIMIX Concrete 505-Series products are ideal for new construction and repair works of architectural concrete structures. They are ready-to-use, thus making them particularly suitable to achieve uniform consistency and colored products.
BATIMIX Concrete 505 Series products have the following characteristics:
BATIMIX Concrete 505 Series products contain cement and silica fume. In case of contact with the eyes or skin, rinse the contact area immediately with plenty of water. Wear suitable gloves. For further information, refer to the product Material Safety Data Sheet.
1 – Substrate preparation All substrates should be properly cleaned from dust, debris, wax, or foreign materials prior to application BATIMIX Concrete 505 Series. For optimum bonding, sandblast the concrete and reinforcing bar surfaces and then remove all dust and debris by air blasting or brooming. Prior to concreting, the substrate should be saturated but free of standing water (SSD condition).
2 – Formwork If applications are to be made to vertical or overhead surfaces, formwork will be required. However, special attention should be realized to assess the effect of releasing agents on the colored concrete. Formworks should be designed to withstand the developed concrete lateral pressure; refer to ACI 347 “Formwork for Concrete”.
3 – Product preparation A 50-kg bag of BATIMIX Concrete 505 Series should be mixed with 4 to 5 liters of clean water. The mixing should be done with a medium-speed mechanical mixer for a minimum of 3 minutes until obtaining a consistent homogenous material.
4 – Concrete placement Do not place BATIMIX Concrete 505 Series when ambient temperature is below 5 °C or higher than 35 °C; refer to ACI 306R “Cold Weather Concreting” and ACI 305 “Hot Weather Concreting”. In warm weather, cold water can be used to cool concrete temperature and prevent rapid workability loss.
BATIMIX Concrete 505 Series can be placed by pumping or cast-in-place using buckets. It must be thoroughly worked into the forms so that they are entirely filled and the reinforcing bars adequately and tightly surrounded. The concrete should be properly compacted to expel air and ensure optimum consolidation. All placement, compaction, vibration, and finishing operations should be completed within 30 minutes from the time of placing the concrete in the spalled area.
5 – Curing Freshly deposited BATIMIX Concrete 505 Series must be protected from excessively hot or cold temperatures and maintained with minimum moisture loss; refer to ACI 308 “Practice for Curing Concrete”. Curing should begin immediately after the finishing operations and continue for a minimum of 7 days.
Curing of BATIMIX Concrete 505 Series can be done using absorptive mats that are kept continuously wet. Alternatively, appropriate sheet materials or curing compounds conforming to ASTM C171 / C309 can be used.
| ASTM Test Method | BATIMIX Concrete 505 Results | | --------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------- | | Water per 50-kg bag, liters | 4 – 5 | | Initial slump (C143), mm | 220 | | Fresh wet density (C138), kg/m³ | 2,350 | | Air content (C231), % | 2.3 | | Average setting time (C403), hours | 7 – 10 | | Compressive strength after 1 and 28 days (C39), MPa | 8.5 and 40 | | Flexural strength after 7 and 28 days (C78), MPa | 4.8 and 7.1 | | Adhesion to substrate (D4541), MPa | > 3 |
The above data are averages of several tests under laboratory conditions of 23 °C and 50% R.H.; they may significantly vary in the field.
To adapt mixture composition to specific applications and climatic conditions, supplementary admixtures such as set-retarder, set-accelerator, air entrainer, and synthetic fibers may be added to the original mix design. Kindly consult your Holderchem representative.
BATIMIX Concrete 505 Series should be stored in a closed and dry place. Avoid freezing and excessive temperatures. Unopened bags have a shelf life of six months when stored as recommended.
