Shrinkage reducing admixture for reduced cracks in mortars and grouts
BATIMIX Anti-Shrink M-830 is a ready-to-use liquid admixture that significantly reduces drying shrinkage of mortars and grouts.
The pore water capillary tension is the primary driver of the drying shrinkage in cementitious-based systems. BATIMIX Anti-Shrink M-830 is made from high grade selected chemicals to dramatically reduce the tensile strength developed within the menisci and the angle of contact with the capillary walls. It does not contain expansive material. It instead acts chemically to reduce the surface tension of water in the mortar capillary pores.
Applications using BATIMIX Anti-Shrink M-830 include mortars and grouts used for masonry and repair such as plastering, rendering, patching, pointing, bricklaying, and screeding.
Mortars prepared with BATIMIX Anti-Shrink M-830 are characterized by the following:
In the plastic state:
In the hardened state:
BATIMIX Anti-Shrink M-830 is not a hazardous material. However, it should not be swallowed or allowed to come into contact with skin and eyes. Suitable gloves and goggles should be worn. For additional information, kindly refer to the product’s Material Safety Data Sheet.
BATIMIX Anti-Shrink M-830 is developed to comply with the requirements of BS 8443:2005.
The recommended addition rate of BATIMIX Anti-Shrink M-830 may range from 0.5% to 2.5% of cement weight. Inside this range, drying shrinkage reduction varies almost linearly as a function of the dosage used. The optimum addition rate should best be determined by trials using the actual mix composition with site materials under conditions that will be experienced in field.
When designing mortar mixes with BATIMIX Anti-Shrink M-830, it is necessary to reduce the free water content to maintain constant workability and compressive strength. It is to be noted that proper curing procedures should always be implemented to prevent fast water evaporation of freshly applied mortar and thereby plastic shrinkage.
For indication purposes, drying shrinkage reductions up to 30% can be measured for mortar prepared with 25% Portland cement, 75% sand, 0.50 W/C, and 1.5% BATIMIX Anti-Shrink M-830 compared to similar mortar made without such admixture. Test results were obtained after 28 days of air storage as per ASTM C 157.
An overdose of BATIMIX Anti-Shrink M-830 will produce an increase in air content together with reduced compressive strength after 28 days as compared to that normally obtained.
BATIMIX Anti-Shrink M-830 is compatible with all types of Portland cement, replacement materials such as silica fume, and other Holderchem admixtures incorporated in the same mortar. During batching, all admixtures should be added separately to the mortar mix. The performance of various admixtures on the fresh and hardened mortar properties should be assessed using trial tests.
BATIMIX Anti-Shrink M-830 should not be directly added on the dry cement. It should rather be added towards the end of mixing, i.e. after incorporating all of the mixing water and other chemical admixtures.

BATIMIX Anti-Shrink M-830 has a minimum shelf life of 12 months if kept unopened and stored at temperatures ranging from 2 to 50 ºC.
