Shrinkage-reducing admixture for concrete
BATIMIX Anti-Shrink 610 is a ready-to-use liquid admixture that significantly reduces the drying shrinkage of concrete. It does not contain expansive material. It acts chemically to decrease the surface tension of water in the concrete capillary pores.
The primary cause of drying shrinkage in concrete is the tension of pore water capillaries. BATIMIX Anti-Shrink 610 is made from high-grade glycol chemicals selected for their ability to significantly reduce the tensile strength of the menisci and the angle of contact with capillary walls.
This admixture is typically used in concrete casting applications where cracks due to drying shrinkage are common and can have severe consequences on the durability of the structure.
Concrete prepared with BATIMIX Anti-Shrink 610 is characterized by the following:
In the plastic state:
In the hardened state:
BATIMIX Anti-Shrink 610 is not considered a hazardous product. However, it should not be swallowed or allowed to come into contact with skin and eyes. Suitable gloves and goggles should be worn. For additional information, kindly refer to the product’s Material Safety Data Sheet.
BATIMIX Anti-Shrink 610 is developed to comply with the requirements of BS 8443:2005.
The recommended addition rate of BATIMIX Anti-Shrink 610 may range from 1% to 3% of cement weight. Inside this range, drying shrinkage reduction varies almost linearly as a function of the dosage used. The optimum addition rate should best be determined by trials using the actual mix composition with site materials under conditions that will be experienced in field.
It is to be noted that the free water content should be reduced when designing concrete mixes with BATIMIX Anti-Shrink 610 to maintain similar W/C. Proper curing procedures are recommended to prevent fast water evaporation of freshly cast concrete and thereby reduce plastic shrinkage.
For indication purposes, drying shrinkage reductions up to 50% can be measured for concrete prepared with 350 kg/m³ of Portland cement, W/C of 0.50, and 2% of BATIMIX Anti-Shrink 610 compared to similar concrete made without such admixture. Test results were obtained after 28 days of air storage as per ASTM C 157.
An overdose of BATIMIX Anti-Shrink 610 will produce an increase in air content and workability, compared to those normally produced from a control concrete. The early and 28-day compressive strengths may decrease with an overdose of BATIMIX Anti-Shrink 610.
BATIMIX Anti-Shrink 610 is compatible with all other Batimix admixtures incorporated in the same concrete. It should not be pre-mixed with other admixture as this may alter its performance. During batching, the admixtures should be dispensed and added separately to the concrete mix. The performance of various admixtures on the fresh and hardened concrete properties should be assessed using trial tests.
Concrete mixtures based on Portland cement with or without replacement materials such as silica fume, fly ash, and blast furnace slag are compatible with BATIMIX Anti-Shrink 610.
Automatic dispensing systems should preferably be used to introduce the correct quantity of BATIMIX Anti-Shrink 610 in the concrete mixer. This admixture should not be directly introduced on the dry cement. It should rather be added towards the end of mixing, i.e. after incorporating all of the mixing water and other chemical admixtures.
