Batimix Anti-Frost 630

Holderchem

Cold weather antifreeze admixture for concrete

Description

BATIMIX Anti-Frost 630 is a liquid admixture designed to reduce/eliminate frost attacks during cold weather concreting. It does not contain calcium chloride or added chloride ions that can potentially attack embedded steel reinforcement.

Main Purpose

BATIMIX Anti-Frost 630 is designed to enable concrete to be placed at sub-freezing temperatures by promoting cement hydration. It increases early strength development, thus reducing cold-weather protective measures and construction costs. It is to be noted that air entrainment up to 8% is crucial to ensure the long service life of concrete structures exposed to moisture and freezing temperatures.

Applications using BATIMIX Anti-Frost 630 include all types of concrete castings in cold weather conditions, containing or not steel reinforcement.

Features

Concrete prepared with BATIMIX Anti-Frost 630 is characterized by the following:

In the plastic state:

  • Reduced frost attack during cold weather concreting
  • Minimized bleeding and segregation
  • Densified and cohesive skeleton
  • Decreased overtime, allowing same-day finishing

In the hardened state:

  • Reduced construction costs – no cold weather delays
  • Increased early compressive and flexural strengths

Properties

  • Appearance: brown liquid
  • Specific gravity: 1.25 ± 0.02 at 23 ºC
  • Chloride content: nil
  • Alkali content: typically less than 1.5% as Na₂O
  • Air entrainment: less than 1% increase at normal dosages

Health and Safety

BATIMIX Anti-Frost 630 is not considered a hazardous product. However, it should not be swallowed or allowed to come into contact with skin and eyes. Suitable gloves and goggles should be worn. For additional information, kindly refer to the product’s Material Safety Data Sheet.

Dosage Rates

The optimum dosage of BATIMIX Anti-Frost 630 to meet specific requirements is best determined by trials using the actual mix formulation with site materials under conditions that will be experienced in use. As a guide to such trials, the addition rates shall vary from 2% to 5% of the cementitious materials. Dosages outside the specified range may be used if necessary to meet particular mix requirements.

In cold temperatures, follow ACI 306 recommendations as specific procedures may be required. It is to be noted that the free water content should be reduced when designing concrete mixes with BATIMIX Anti-Frost 630 to maintain similar W/C, and therefore similar compressive strength.

Effect of Overdosing

In general, an overdose of BATIMIX Anti-Frost 630 will produce a highly cohesive material with significant loss in workability and increased early strength as compared to that normally obtained. The rapid initial acceleration of the cement hydration process will generally lead to slightly reduced 28-day compressive strength.

Compliance with Standards

BATIMIX Anti-Frost 630 complies with the following standards:

  • EN 934-2: T6
  • ASTM C 494 Type C

Compatibility

BATIMIX Anti-Frost 630 is compatible with all other Batimix admixtures incorporated in the same concrete. During batching, all admixtures should be added separately to the concrete mix. The performance of various admixtures on the fresh and hardened concrete properties should be assessed using trial tests.

Concrete mixtures based on Portland cement with or without replacement materials such as silica fume, fly ash, and blast furnace slag are compatible with BATIMIX Anti-Frost 630.

Dispensing

Automatic dispensing systems should preferably be used to introduce the correct quantity of BATIMIX Anti-Frost 630 in the concrete mixer. This admixture should not be directly introduced on the dry cement. It should rather be added after incorporating around 2/3 of the mixing water, but in any case prior to introducing other chemicals such as water reducers. Make sure to agitate well the product prior to use.

Technical Support

Holderchem provides, upon request, technical advisory services pertaining to concrete mix design, admixture selection, materials testing, and dispensing systems.

Storage

BATIMIX Anti-Frost 630 has a minimum shelf life of 12 months if kept unopened and stored at temperatures ranging from 2 to 50 ºC.
