Liquid admixture for reduced efflorescence of mortars and grouts
BATIMIX Anti-Efflorescence M-870 is a ready-to-use liquid admixture designed from a balanced blend of stearate chemicals to significantly improve mortar surface appearance by eliminating any potential risk of efflorescence. Upon request, this product can be supplied in powder form.
Efflorescence is a crystalline deposit, usually white, of water-soluble salts on the surface of masonry. The principal objection to efflorescence is the appearance of the salts and the nuisance of their removal.
A combination of circumstances is necessary for the formation of efflorescence. First, there must be a source of soluble slats which may result from the masonry construction materials and elements. Second, there must be moisture present to pick up the soluble salts and carry them to the surface. Third, evaporation of hydrostatic pressure must cause the solution to migrate, thus leaving crystalline deposits on the masonry surface. If any one of these conditions is eliminated, efflorescence will not occur.
Applications using BATIMIX Anti-Efflorescence M-870 include all types of mortars and grouts used for masonry and repair such as plastering, rendering, patching, and pointing.
Mortars prepared with BATIMIX Anti-Efflorescence M-870 are characterized by the following:
In the plastic state:
In the hardened state:
BATIMIX Anti-Efflorescence M-870 is not a hazardous material. However, it should not be swallowed or allowed to come into contact with skin and eyes. Suitable gloves and goggles should be worn. For additional information, kindly refer to the product’s Material Safety Data Sheet.
Tests have shown that overdosed concrete mixtures with BATIMIX Anti-Efflorescence M-870 will result in increased levels of cohesiveness.
BATIMIX Anti-Efflorescence M-870 is compatible with all types of Portland cement, replacement materials such as silica fume, and other Holderchem admixtures incorporated in the same mortar. During batching, all admixtures should be added separately to the mortar mix. The performance of various admixtures on the fresh and hardened concrete properties should be assessed using trial tests.
BATIMIX Anti-Efflorescence M-870 should not be directly added on the dry cement. It should rather be added towards the end of mixing, i.e. after incorporating all of the mixing water and other chemical admixtures.
Holderchem provides, upon request, technical advisory services pertaining to mix design, admixture selection, and materials evaluation.
BATIMIX Anti-Efflorescence M-870 has a minimum shelf life of 12 months if kept unopened and stored at temperatures ranging from 2 to 50 ºC.
