Admixture to reduce alkali-silica reactivity in concrete
BATIMIX Alkali-Silica 650 is a lithium nitrate admixture used to minimize the alkali-silica reactivity (ASR) that may occur in the concrete.
ASR is a chemical reaction. It occurs between the reactive silica in aggregates used to make concrete and the alkalis, sodium or potassium, present in the concrete. The reaction causes the formation of a gel that absorbs water and swells, exerting internal pressure that can lead to cracking and premature deterioration of the concrete.
BATIMIX Alkali-Silica 650 provides maximum protection against ASR. It can be used for plain or reinforced concrete, precast, prestressed, and architectural.
Concrete prepared with BATIMIX Alkali-Silica 650 is characterized by the following:
In the plastic state:
In the hardened state:
BATIMIX Alkali-Silica 650 is not considered a hazardous product. However, it should not be swallowed or allowed to come into contact with skin and eyes. Suitable gloves and goggles should be worn. For additional information, kindly refer to the product’s Material Safety Data Sheet.
The performance of BATIMIX Alkali-Silica 650 is best assessed after preliminary tests using the actual concrete mix design with site materials under conditions that will be experienced in site. The product is found to be effective over a wide range of concrete formulations. Typically, dosages varying from 0.8% to 2.5% of the cement weight are recommended, depending on the expected level of ASR.
Tests have shown that overdosed concrete mixtures with BATIMIX Alkali-Silica 650 will result in slightly higher 24-hours compressive strength due to some set acceleration. However, no noticeable effect will be seen on the 28-day compressive strength.
BATIMIX Alkali-Silica 650 is compatible with all other Batimix admixtures incorporated in the same concrete. It should not be pre-mixed with other admixture as this may alter its performance. During batching, the admixtures should be dispensed and added separately to the concrete mix. The performance of various admixtures on the fresh and hardened concrete properties should be assessed using trial tests.
Concrete mixtures based on Portland cement with or without replacement materials such as silica fume, fly ash, and blast furnace slag are compatible with BATIMIX Alkali-Silica 650.
Accurate and reliable automatic dispensing systems should be used to introduce the correct quantity of BATIMIX Alkali-Silica 650 in the concrete mixer to avoid variations in dosage. This product should not be directly added on the dry cementitious particles. It should rather be introduced after incorporating all of the mixing water and other chemical admixtures.

BATIMIX Alkali-Silica 650 has a minimum shelf life of 12 months if kept unopened and stored at temperatures ranging from 2 to 50 ºC.
