Masonry Binders, Mortars & Grouts Overview

Holderchem offers a wide range of hydraulic masonry binders, masonry mortars, repair-mortars, grouts and mortars for flooring applications. They include the following:

1- Hydraulic masonry binders manufactured with either white or grey cement, finely ground pozzolanic fillers and chemical additives. They are produced in Type N, Type S and Type M strength levels for use in preparation of ASTM C270 - 12 Standard Specification for Mortar for Unit Masonry Type N, S or M mortar.

2- Masonry mortars composed of hydraulic binders, carefully graded sand, and a combination of chemical additives. At the job-site, these products only require the addition of water prior to use. The product range includes:

Bloc Fix mortars designed for the assemblage of masonry units produced in each of two alternative specifications: proportion specifications and property specifications.

Spatter dash slurry coat intended for substrate preparation.

Plasters designed as general-purpose rendering and plastering mortars, or as packaged dry, combined materials for surface bonding mortars.

Hydrophobic mortars designed as plasters providing weather protection.

One-coat rendering mortars or monocouche renders designed for external use and applied as a decorative finish and to provide weather protection.

3- Specialty repair and new construction mortars and grouts composed of hydraulic binders, carefully graded sand, and a combination of chemical additives. At the job-site, these products only require the addition of water prior to use. The product range includes the following:

Non-shrink mortars and grouts , ideal for filling voids of different sizes and for repair works. They are designed to set rapidly and compensate for cement stone shrinkage.

Thixotropic mortars for repair with or without fiber reinforcements designed for both repair and new construction applications

Accelerated-setting mortars containing high-alumina cement classified as rapid hardening, very rapid hardening and ultra rapid hardening based on the results.

Shotcrete mortars , suitable for applications using the “dry-process” methods produced in line with the following grading classifications: general use grade (GU), sulfate resistant grade (SR), lower permeability grade (LP) and fiber reinforcement grade (FR). Another set of high strength shotcrete mortars suitable for applications using “wet-process” methods is also available following the same grading classification.

4- Flooring mortars developed for car parks, industrial floors, warehouse floors, sport floors or wooden floors. The product range includes:

Floor screeds, which are cementitious materials made from cement, sharp sand applied onto either a solid in situ concrete ground floor slab or onto a precast concrete floor unit.

Self-leveling underlayment and Resurfacing mortars , for internal and external use, developed as cementitious self-leveling products designed for use over various substrates.

Epoxy mortars , which are tough abrasion resistant concrete resurfacing three-component epoxy materials designed to provide strength, outstanding impact and chemical spillage resistance.

Self-leveling epoxy floor mortars , applied over concrete floors to create a durable, low-maintenance flooring surface. Specifically, self-leveling epoxy flooring can be applied over old cracked and damaged concrete floors to create a smooth, seamless surface. This is because during application the epoxy spreads out to fill cracks or chips in concrete floors.

Dry-shake floor hardeners applied to impart increased abrasion resistance to concrete floors.

Waterproofing & Sealing Products Overview

Holderchem offers a wide range of cementitious-based waterproofing products for new construction and repair works. The products can be divided as per the following:

1- Waterproofing by crystallization slurries incorporating various active chemicals, which react with the free lime and moisture present in the capillary pores of the concrete to form insoluble crystalline complexes that form crystals that block the capillaries and minor cracks thus preventing any further water ingress.

2- Cementitious-based waterproofers are used for various waterproofing applications and are applied against active or passive water pressure. They are rapid setting to stop instantly the ingress of water, efflorescence free, non-shrink, self-leveling, and offering adequate resistance towards abrasion.

3- Sealants including multi-purpose elastomeric polyurethane sealants, polysulphide sealants and surface hardeners

Polyurethane sealants, which are versatile and therefore suitable for various fields of use, such as floor and wall joints around windows, doors, floor joints exposed to different chemicals, joints in waste water and sewage treatment plants, joints in box culverts and tunnels, joints in pedestrian and vehicular traffic areas such as walkways, decks, and parking garages.

Polysulphide sealants, are two component synthetic rubber-based sealants, which cure by absorption of atmospheric moisture to form a permanently flexible seal. They are suitable for use within the construction industry on all joints where above average repeated movement is encountered over a wide temperature range. They provide outstanding resistance to weathering and chemical attack from solvent, alkalis, dilute acids, oils and grease.

Surface hardeners designed to penetrate, seal and harden the concrete surface, and to make concrete surfaces more abrasive resistant while reducing damages caused from water and oil borne contaminants. They are generally used to provide long lasting protection of concrete surfaces in warehousing, distribution and car parks.

Water-repellents designed to repel water, reduce staining and spalling of substrates and provide effective concrete protection from de-icing salt attacks.

Concrete Admixtures Overview

Holderchem supplies a complete range of admixtures for the design of durable and cost-effective concrete structures. These include:

Water reducers, mid-range water reducers and high range water reducers, which can be adapted for hot, moderate and cold weather climates. Water reducing admixtures often referred to as plasticizers, are intended to increase the workability of plastic or fresh concrete. They allow its placement with less consolidation effort. They are often used to reduce the water content of concrete mix designs while maintaining their workability, improving as a result the concrete strength and durability properties. High range water reducers otherwise known as superplasticizers allow for increased water reduction beyond what is achievable with traditional plasticizers and with lesser deleterious effect. Midrange water reducers are designed as combinations of the above with water reduction characteristics in the intermediate range. All types of water reducers may be supplied with retarding or accelerating effects to adjust properties for seasonal and/or job requirements.

Air entraining admixtures primarily used to add and stabilize tiny air bubbles in concrete. Besides the increase in freeze-thaw and scaling resistances, air-entrained concrete is more workable than non-entrained concrete. The use of air-entraining agents also reduces bleeding and segregation of fresh concrete.

Set-retarders designed to delay concrete setting by slowing the concrete hydration mechanism. They are typically used to delay setting in hot weather environments, to allow for long distances from batching plant to site and for large and difficult pours where partial setting before the pour is complete is undesirable.

Set-accelerators designed to reduce setting time by speeding concrete hydration. They are typically used to accelerate setting in cold weather, prefab manufacture and, shotcreting. Products based on nitrates are often favored over chloride-based products as the latter may cause corrosion in steel reinforcements.

Specialty admixtures such as integral water repellents for reduced moisture absorption rates, viscosity-modifiers to control undesired bleeding/segregation commonly used in self-consolidating concrete, anti-washout admixtures to limit washout in underwater concrete, shrinkage reducing agents to minimize surface cracks, corrosion inhibiting agents for superior steel protection, antifreeze admixtures to prevent frost attack in very cold climates, admixtures for lightweight concrete, admixtures to reduce alkali-silica reactivity, synthetic fibers used as secondary reinforcement, silica fume to create durable high-performance concrete, blended cements for enhanced performances and lower carbon dioxide emissions, surface retarders for architectural and exposed aggregate surfaces, mould release agents for reduced adhesion against formworks and curing agents for optimized strength development.

Adhesives & Tile Grouts Overview

Holderchem offers a range of adhesives and tile grouts classified as follows:

1- Tile Adhesives are classified as cementitious if based on hydraulic binding agents, aggregates, and organic additives mixed with water or latex admixtures or as normal reaction adhesives when made from single or multi-component mixtures of synthetic resins, mineral fillers and organic additives in which curing occurs by chemical reaction – epoxy or urethane based products. Holderchem tile adhesives, available in most cases in both white and grey colors, are classified as follows:

Cementitious adhesives, which have defined characteristics relative to tensile adhesion, strength, water immersion, heat aging and freeze thaw and are produced to yield different setting times, slip and open time characteristics and designated accordingly. These products are also available with improved cementitious adhesives, with improved characteristics pertaining to tensile adhesion, strength, water immersion, heat aging and freeze thaw cycles. They are produced to yield different setting times, slip, and open time characteristics and designated accordingly.

Reaction resin adhesives have been developed to meet standard requirements and are supplied with reduced slip characteristics if required. These products are also available with additional improved properties, differentiated by their slip, or extended open time characteristics.

2- Epoxy & acrylate based adhesives, also known as structural or engineering adhesives, used in applications where a high strength bond is required. They are better in heat and chemical resistance than other common adhesives. They are supplied flexible or rigid, transparent or alternatively opaque and colored and exhibit different setting times. A major application in construction includes epoxy injection adhesives for steel bar planting with anti-aging and waterproofing features. These are available as pure epoxies or alternatively as methacrylate based styrene free resins.

3- Latex-based adhesives, also known as bonding agents, are offered as base polymers or admixtures for tile adhesives, grouts and cementitious waterproofing and repair products. They include styrene butadiene, styrene acrylic, vinyl acrylic or vinyl versatic copolymers and vinyl acetate homopolymers3-

4- Tile grouts developed and classified as normal setting cementitious grouts, improved cementitious grouts with additional characteristics and reduced water absorption, improved cementitious grouts with additional characteristics and strong abrasion resistance, or improved reaction resin grouts with additional characteristics.
